Here are some of our top tips for moving with children and pets.
School Matters
Ensure that you transfer your children’s school records well in advance to reduce the chances of delays when registering them at their new school.
If possible, help make the transition by visiting the school with them before their first day. Help them get the lay of the land and, perhaps, meet their new teacher.
Ideally, make the move during the summer, so the kids won’t have to deal with a move in the middle of a school year.
Safety First
If you have small kids or pets, it’s likely that your home has been thoroughly kid-proofed and pet-proofed. You’ll have to do the same in your new home. If possible, take a day to do that prior to bringing your kids and pets home.
Keep Comfort Items Close
You never know when delays may mean a few extra days without your belongings. Pack a small bag for each child that includes books, games, and other items that will help relieve stress and boredom.
Get Them Out from Underfoot
Having small children and pets running around on moving day isn’t ideal—and it can be dangerous. Many pets have gone missing by slipping out a door left propped open on moving day. Try to make arrangements to have your kids stay with family or friends, and your pets at a pet sitter or boarding facility. This will make it easier on them and you.
Moving Long-Distance with Pets
If you’re completing a long-distance move, you’ll have to decide how to transport your pets. If you’re driving, they can make the trip with you. If not, consider a pet transportation company rather than putting them through the stress of flying in cargo on a plane.
