Understanding the Different Types of Moving Coverage

Before you make a move this season, it’s important to consider all the practical elements of a relocation, including your valuation coverage. When it comes to carrying out a long-distance move, insurance protection can help ease a lot of concerns.

Moving coverage offers several benefits, like:

  • Financial reimbursement for lost or damaged property
  • Peace of mind during a long-distance move
  • Help with repair expenses from moving damage
  • Movers more likely to take care with items

What are the Different Types of Moving Coverage?

There are two different types of moving valuation coverage. Under Federal Law, interstate movers in the United States are required to offer both options to customers. The basic coverage is free. Customers can also opt for an upgraded coverage that provides a better return if there is damage to their property.

These types of coverage include:

  • Released Value Protection: This is the basic moving coverage that all movers offer customers for free. It provides a reimbursement of no more than .60 cents per pound for items that are lost or damaged. The reimbursement rate is the same no matter what you ship, including fine art, antiques, or just old clothing.
  • Full Value Protection: Movers offer this additional protection at competitive rates for customers. Usually Full Value Protection is one to two percent of the total value of your belongings. This covers the full replacement value of any items that are damaged or lost.

It should be noted that residential movers can limit the full value coverage of items of ‘extraordinary value.’ Typically, this means any items worth more than $100 per pound won’t be covered.

In this case you’ll need to purchase third-party liability coverage to get full replacement value for expensive items. Movers aren’t required to offer this additional coverage, but they can choose to do so. Or, you can go to an insurance company ahead of your move to purchase the added moving coverage.
