Your Moving Checklist

Two to four weeks prior to moving

Begin identifying items that you may no longer want or need. Dispose of them by: Having a garage sale, donating them to charity or by throwing them away if they cannot be used by anyone.

Get change of address cards from the Post Office and use them to notify: Business or Credit Accounts, Friends, Magazine Subscriptions, Postmaster, Motor Vehicle Department, Insurance Co. etc.

Arrange to have your children's school records transferred to their new school.

Obtain copies of any medical or dental recoreds for the family, especially children's immunization records.

Obtain appraisals of any antiques, or other highly valued items which are to be moved. This information will be needed for insurance purposes.

Make your travel plans and hotel reservations if needed.

Start using your food supply and replace only what's necessary and only in quantities which will be used prior to the move.

One week prior to moving day

Arrange to have utility services disconnected prior to your leaving and connected at your new residence on or before delivery day.

Have bank transfer your accounts and release safe deposit box.

Have your car serviced and reduce fuel level to no more than 1/4 of a tank if it is to be transported in the van.

Close all local charge accounts.

Discontinue all home services (paper, lawn care, diaper delivery, etc.).

Begin gathering all items that will be taken with you and mark "Do Not Move."

Arrange shipment of pets, if you are not taking them in the car with you.

Confirm your travel plans, especially hotel/motel reservations.

Packing Day (One Day Before Moving)

Be present when the packing crew arrives.

Designate the items you expect to need immediately upon arrival; pack and mark them for quick accessibility.

Empty and defrost the refrigerator and freezer.

Complete the packing you plan to do yourself.

Moving Day

Go over entire Checklist to make sure you haven't forgotten anything.

Be present when the moving crew arrives.

Check inventory to be sure everything you want loaded in the van is included.

Before the driver departs, inspect inside and outside your residence for items that may have been overlooked. Check such areas as: Attic, Basement, Garage, Backyard, Cabinets, Drawers, Closets, Medicine Cabinets and Out Buildings.

Be sure to provide the Covan driver with your contact telephone number at destination.

On the Bill of Lading, be sure to verify: Your transit protection, delivery address and notification phone number and delivery date or spread. Sign the Bill of Lading and keep a copy with your inventory lists.

Get the van operator's name, home base and truck number. Also, get the name of the Covan agent serving your destination area.

Before Delivery Day

Contact the designated Covan destination agent to make sure they know where you can be contacted when the van arrives.

Check with your utility services and have them connected.

Examine your new home and decide on furniture placement before the van arrives. It would be helpful to draw a diagram of each room. Indicate the location of the furniture and tape the diagram on the door of each appropriate room.

Delivery Day

Check off each item on the Inventory List as it is brought into the house.

Check the condition of each item.

In the event that there is any missing or damaged items, make note of them on the Inventory Lists. Should you need to file a claim, repairs or replacements will be expeditiously handled in accordance with your transit protection agreement.
